![]() Injera, an Ethiopian bread, reminds me a bit of giant, super-airy pancakes. I got it to go, much to my spouse’s delight. (When trying a new ethnic food, it’s always nice to get expert advice.) I chose a dish of spicy lamb tips and vegetables, served with injera. The friendly clerk at the counter helped me narrow down my choices based on meat preference and spice level. I went for the Ethiopian side of the menu. This restaurant connects to Halal Supermarket International, yet another spot where home chefs can pick up authentic ethnic ingredients. Last but not least (in fact it was my dinner last night) is Red Sea Ethiopian and Mediterranean at 22 Green Springs Highway. I actually found a website dedicated to this culinary favorite. Joy Young Restaurant was a downtown Birmingham institution beginning in 1919 and remaining there until it moved to another location sometime after 1973. One or two local restaurants have come close since, but no one has ever made them better. Their eggrolls were the best I have ever eaten. ![]() Thinking about that food has the power to make my mouth water still. It seems like we always ordered Chop Suey Chow Mein or Egg Foo Young. Once, the whole family celebrated granddaddy's birthday there, maybe his seventieth. Joy Young's, we would smile and shout in unison.Īs a child I remember going there for many Sunday dinners. I imagine we would all answer at once without a second thought. If polled, I think my siblings and cousins would vote just like me on at least one issue.which restaurant would you consider your family's favorite while growing up.
